This year’s “Tilt A Whirl” (Red House Records) documents Nelson’s timely return to the studio. It’s his first album in three years and is stacked back to back with songs that rail on about just how screwed up our country’s priorities are. His guitar-driven songs are no doubt influenced by his life in Michigan, the most economically troubled state in the union. His song “Promised Land” sings the ballad of the working poor, and “Dust” eloquently tells the big banks where to stick their mortgages. Nelson is maturing with each new album, and he knows how to use his guitar to hit you where it counts.

Surrounded by saws, drills, wood-benders and other tools of the guitar-making trade in his basement, Drew Nelson held the mahogany panel next to his care and tapped it with his fingers.

“It really rings,” he marveled. “It has a character and a sound to it.”

That handsome slice of wood soon will become the top of another Nelson-made acoustic guitar, forming the vital soundboard that distinguishes each instrument, giving it a distinctive resonance.

Perhaps it’s only apropos that the veteran Grand Rapids singer-songwriter has turned some of his musical passion toward making guitars the past four years: He’s long been a lyrical soundboard for Michigan’s rough-hewn common folk and its inspiring natural beauty.

ST. PAUL, MN — Red House Records is very pleased to announce that they have signed Michigan songwriter Drew Nelson to its award-winning roster. An artist with an international reputation and several critically acclaimed albums under his belt, the folk/Americana singer is excited to be a part of the Grammy-winning indie label, joining an illustrious list of artists that includes veterans like John Gorka, Hot Tuna, Lucy Kaplansky and Dale Watson as well as younger Billboard-charting bands like The Wailin’ Jennys and Storyhill.

The Dark River project is a collection of classic public-domain material from the Civil War era interpreted by some of Austin’s finest singer/songwriters. It begins with a young man on his way to the battle of Shiloh, through the years of blood and glory and concludes on the streets of Laredo. Produced by Chuck Pinnell and featuring great artists like Slaid Cleaves, Jon Dee Graham, Jeff Plankenhorn, Drew Nelson, Eliza Gilkyson, and many more, Dark River’s stunning performances and arrangements present a vibrant narrative about America’s most convulsive decade.
